Today’s hectic lifestyles leave little time for eating properly, much less mindfully. Sadly, we consider mindless eating, and eating on the go normal. How many people when asked can quickly answer the question, "What did you eat for dinner last night?"
Mindfulness while eating or performing daily tasks is finally being recognized as an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Because eating healthy give you better behavior. Eating mindfully helps you relax, while aiding digestion as you become aware of everything you put in your mouth.
Here are a few suggestions for mindful eating:
Preparing a meal for oneself or others is an act of love. Eating should be a calm, almost meditative experience. See the colors on your plate more mindfully. Take small bites. Chew slowly savoring the taste and texture of each morsel. Quiet your mind and enjoy each moment. If you are with others, enjoy your time together without rushing.
Include a medley of colorful foods to entice your eyes and taste buds. Create your own mixed vegetables. Combine broccoli, cauliflower, red pepper, carrots, corn and a handful of black beans for rich nutrition and bold color. Steam vegetables until crisp tender, toss with your favorite flavored vinegar, and top with sliced almonds or walnuts.
Where possible, choose healthy, organic, locally grown and raised products such as free-range eggs. They are chemical free, contain nutrients vital to our health and well-being, and are kind to the earth. According to recent reports, animals treated humanely, are less likely to be traumatized at the time of slaughter, making their meat tenderer.
Remember, nearly everything we eat originated from living plants or animals, not from a plastic package in the supermarket. Reflect on this and honor their sacrifice while enjoying the nutritional benefits they provide.
Invite a lonely neighbor, troubled friend or someone you have been meaning to connect with, to help prepare and share a meal. With each person performing a specific task, the camaraderie, conversation, and meal could be very inspiring!
Set an attractive table with fresh cut flowers, candles, cloth linens and soft music.
Take only the food you need to feel satisfied, instead of piling your plate. Eat slowly, savoring each bite.
Avoid demonizing food. You are in charge and must take responsibility for your behavior.
Enjoy small amounts of your favorite "forbidden" treats occasionally, and in moderation.
Ignore advertisers claiming their miracle products will help you lose ten pounds or more in a few days. They are more interested in your wallet than your well-being. Being overweight does not happen overnight, and it is highly unlikely that you will lose it that quickly. Moderation and mindful eating are the keys to losing and maintaining a healthy weight.
At the end of each meal, take a moment and silently give thanks for your blessings.
